After all, the\n\u201chalf-life\u201d of job skills has dropped from 30 years back in the 1980s to a mere\nfive years as of 2014, and might be even less these days. People looking for\nopportunities to boost their digital skillsets now have a wide variety of\noptions, including the new <a href=\"https:\/\/news.elearninginside.com\/should-we-learn-with-facebook-a-troubled-platform-enters-the-elearning-market\/\">Learn\nwith Facebook<\/a> eLearning initiative. Its developers hope to train 1 million\npeople and small businesses in digital skills by 2020. Will this Facebook\ntraining initiative make a significant dent in the growing digital skills gap?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Growing Digital\nSkills Gap: Facebook Training Initiative has Launched<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>A study by the <a href=\"https:\/\/business.linkedin.com\/talent-solutions\/blog\/trends-and-research\/2018\/industries-biggest-talent-shortages-2030?utm_source=hrt&amp;utm_campaign=3048&amp;utm_term=claudioerba\">Korn\nFerry Institute<\/a> says the industries facing the biggest challenges include\nthe following, with estimates of growing world-wide worker shortages through\n2030: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><em>Financial and business services:<\/em><\/strong>\n10.7 million workers short<\/li><li><strong><em>Technology, Media, and Telecommunications:<\/em><\/strong>\n4.3 million workers short<\/li><li><strong><em>Manufacturing:<\/em><\/strong> 7.9 million workers\nshort<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In the technology, media, and telecommunications industry,\nthe specific problem is the lack of relevant digital skills. Companies are\nstruggling to keep up with digitization, with 54% of companies reporting\nproblems in filling positions with properly-skilled workers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.capgemini.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/report_the-digital-talent-gap_final.pdf\">paper\nby Capgemini Digital Transformation Institute and LinkedIn<\/a>, digital skills\nare categorized as \u201csoft\u201d skills or \u201chard\u201d skills. Soft digital skills include\nthings like customer centricity, comfort with ambiguity, a digital-first\nmentality, passion for learning, collaboration, data-driven decision making,\norganizational dexterity, entrepreneurial mindset, and change management. Hard\ndigital skills include a wider range of focused talent in areas such as\ncybersecurity, cloud computing, analytics, web development, mobile app design\nand development, data science, big data, master data management, and so on.\nNotice how many of the hard digital skills are data-related. In light of the\ngrowing digital skills gap, Facebook announced its ambitious goal to boost the\ndigital and social media skills of 1 million business owners and other people \u2013\nfor free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Learn with Facebook\nTraining Initiative: Can it Make a Dent?<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.fb.com\/news\/2018\/06\/training-1-million-people-and-small-business-owners-across-the-us-by-2020\/\">June\n2018 announcement that Learn with Facebook would launch in the fall<\/a>\nincluded a bold vision of what it would do:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This platform will provide access to\nnew digital skills training for people across skill levels and interests;\nwhether you\u2019re a student wanting to learn digital marketing skills, a job\nseeker wanting to bolster your CV, a seasoned professional looking to retrain,\nor a budding entrepreneur wanting to turn an idea into a reality, we\u2019ll have\ntools available to help you reach your goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Four months after its November 2018 launch, what is included\nso far on the Learn with Facebook training initiative? There are four courses,\neach with multiple lessons:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Digital\nMarketing: Get Started<\/strong><ul><li>Discover social media marketing (11 mins)<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Pick the perfect social platform (6 mins)<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Grow a thriving community (7 mins)<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Get digital with customer support (6 mins)<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Digital\nMarketing: Go Further<\/strong><ul><li>Manage your content marketing (8 mins)<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Unlock the power of digital storytelling (9 mins)<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Maximize your marketing with analytics (8 mins)<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Get familiar with the value of coding (8 mins)<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Your Career:\nGetting Hired<\/strong><ul><li>Boost your resume (8 mins)<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Ace your interview (6 mins)<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Your\nCareer: Excel At Work<\/strong><ul><li>Practice your problem solving (7 mins)<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Become an effective team player (9 mins)<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Re-think the way you learn (8 mins)<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s hard to imagine how only 13 lessons for a grand total\nof 101 minutes of eLearning could bridge the digital skills gap. Granted, this\nis only the initial set of offerings in the Facebook training initiative, but\nwill victory be declared if a million people take these courses? To have a real\nimpact on the digital skills gap by 2020, Facebook will need to scale their\nefforts rapidly with more diverse offerings. The current slate of lessons is\nlittle more than a rather light introduction for each area, with an\nunsurprisingly heavy dose of using social media platforms like Facebook and\nInstagram (owned by Facebook).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By contrast, LinkedIn bought online learning company Lynda\nback in 2015 and soon rebranded it to LinkedIn Learning. It now has more than\n13,000 courses and is also forging partnerships for third-party content from\nsuch players as Harvard Business Publishing. This makes the Learn with Facebook\ntraining initiative seem paltry by comparison. Then again, LinkedIn Learning\nisn\u2019t free. A monthly subscription costs $29.99\/month (first month is a free\ntrial) while their annual option runs $24.99\/month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Learn with Facebook was launched in other global markets before the US, including Germany (May 2018), France (May 2018), and India (November 2017).
