Secondary and postsecondary schools, as well as private institutes were represented among this year&#8217;s winners.<\/p>\n<h1>About the Catalyst Awards<\/h1>\n<p>Since 2005, the Blackboard Catalyst Awards have sought to recognize and honor innovation and excellence in the Blackboard community, which serves millions of educators and learners worldwide. The Catalyst Awards are given out in multiple categories: Leading Change; Community Engagement; Teaching and Learning; Inclusive Education;\u00a0Optimizing Student Experience;\u00a0Training\u00a0and Professional Development;\u00a0Student Success; and Exemplary Course. A press release issued by Blackboard on June 18 noted that the winners are selected by a team of Blackboard experts.<\/p>\n<h1>2018 Blackboard Catalyst Awards Winners<\/h1>\n<p><b>Leading Change:\u00a0<\/b>Designed to recognize institutions helping to improve learning outcomes and student success; winners in this category included \u00a0<span class=\"xn-org\">California State University, East Bay,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"xn-org\">Kettering University,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"xn-org\">Metropolitan State University<\/span> of <span class=\"xn-location\">Denver, and\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"xn-org\">Virginia Commonwealth University.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Community Engagement:\u00a0<\/b>This Catalyst Award recognizes clients who are improving student achievement; the 2018 winners included the\u00a0<span class=\"xn-location\">Fremont<\/span> School District 79 in\u00a0<span class=\"xn-location\">Illinois and\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"xn-location\">Vestavia Hills<\/span> City Schools in\u00a0<span class=\"xn-location\">Alabama.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Teaching and Learning:\u00a0<\/b>This Blackboard Catalyst Award category recognizes institutions who have adopted flexible, distance, and online delivery, including mobile technologies. Winners included\u00a0<span class=\"xn-org\">Capella University,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.elearninginside.com\/davidson-academy-promotes-academic-excellence-online-format\/\">Davidson Academy<\/a>,\u00a0<span class=\"xn-org\">George Mason University<\/span>,\u00a0Mayo Clinic,\u00a0Montana Digital Academy,\u00a0<span class=\"xn-org\">Saint Mary&#8217;s College, Indiana, <\/span><span class=\"xn-org\">University of Mississippi, and\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"xn-location\">Wilmington<\/span> University.<\/p>\n<p><b>Inclusive Education:\u00a0<\/b>The 2018 Catalyst Award for inclusive education was given to a team of educators from the\u00a0<span class=\"xn-org\">University of Cincinnati,\u00a0including\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"xn-person\">Megan Wuebker<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-person\">Dave Rathbun<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-person\">Heidi Pettyjohn<\/span>, and <span class=\"xn-person\">Paul Foster.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Optimizing Student Experience:\u00a0<\/b>This Blackboard Catalyst Award honors institutions whose &#8220;educational and administrative innovations have markedly improved the total learner experience.&#8221; The 2018 winners are\u00a0<span class=\"xn-org\">Concordia University (Wisconsin);\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"xn-org\">Lamar University; and\u00a0<\/span>Technical College System of <span class=\"xn-location\">Georgia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Training and Professional Development:\u00a0<\/b>This Catalyst Award honors institutions using Blackboard programs to support and enhance professional development. This year&#8217;s winners include\u00a0<span class=\"xn-location\">Calcasieu Parish<\/span> Public Schools;\u00a0<span class=\"xn-org\">Central Michigan University;\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"xn-org\">Grand Valley State University;\u00a0<\/span>Indian <span class=\"xn-person\">River State College; and the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"xn-location\">Kentucky Community<\/span> and Technical College System.<\/p>\n<p><b>Student Success:\u00a0<\/b>Student success awards, which recognize individuals and\/or institutions whose program applications have led to increased retention, increased completion, and improved outcomes, were given out to teams from\u00a0<span class=\"xn-org\">Bryant University;\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"xn-org\">Continental University (Peru); and\u00a0<\/span>Obridge Academy.<\/p>\n<p><b>Exemplary Course: <\/b>A final category\u00a0recognizes faculty and course designers who have developed exciting and innovative courses that don&#8217;t fit into any of the above categories. There were an additional 20 honorees in this category representing individuals and teams from across the nation<\/p>\n<h1>Winners to be Honored at the Upcoming BlackBoard World Conference<\/h1>\n<p>This year&#8217;s winners will be officially honored at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbworld.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">BbWorld 2018<\/a>, which is Blackboard&#8217;s annual user conference.<\/p>\n<p>The keynote at this year&#8217;s conference will be delivered by Sheila C. Johnson. A successful entrepreneur and philanthropist, Ms. Johnson is also well known for her contributions to higher education. Johnson&#8217;s name is also on a lot of buildings at The New School for Design in New York City where she also serves on the board.<\/p>\n<p>Themes of this year&#8217;s conference include using analytics to drive learner success, inclusive education, optimizing the learner experience, and driving openness in education. Indeed, these themes and more will be explored in hundreds of\u00a0panels, lectures, and hands-on workshop. A scan of this year&#8217;s program also reveals at least a few notably trends, including how to more effectively leverage data to support student achievement.
